Chapter Ten

Surely there were worse things that could happen than being forced to wed the palace whore. Unfortunately, Hugh couldn’t think of a single one at that moment.

Adrienna found her voice first. “I beg your pardon?”

“I was to wait until Hugh was asleep, before slipping into bed with him.”

“And you’d be found there in the morning, too?”

“No. I was to scream rape just as soon as I was settled in the bed.”

Hugh and William both groaned. Dryly, Hugh asked, “The queen was unable to think of something more imaginative?”

“It matters not since I decided not to go along with the plan.”

“How noble.”

Sarah looked down at the floor. “Everything is not always as it appears, milord.”

“Obviously.”

Adrienna rubbed her temples, half hoping the action would set her mind to working. “We need to leave this place.”

The look Hugh shot her confirmed her own opinion about stating something so obvious.

William cracked open the door and looked out into the corridor. After closing the door, he asked, “Where are the guards now?”

The frown creasing Lady Sarah’s forehead sent a cold foreboding down Hugh’s spine. “Perhaps you need to explain all, so we can devise a plan.”

“The guards should be outside in the corridor any moment now.”

Adrienna gasped. “Why did you not say so before we were out of options?”

“I thought I could find a way out of this difficulty before I mentioned anything.”

“My husband will not marry you.”

If the situation weren’t so dire, Hugh would have taken the time to question the outrage evident in Adrienna’s comment. She sounded as if she cared. Wasn’t that what he’d planned all along? So, what was this odd prick in his chest?

“I know.” Sarah’s frown deepened. “But if Queen Eleanor doesn’t find me in this bed, I will end up in one of her cells.” She stared up at the ceiling for a moment. “Yet, if she does find me in bed with him and discovers he is already wed, both of us will end up incarcerated.”

“No.” Hugh dismissed that outcome. “She would need to explain to King Henry why she confined one of his earls. It’s doubtful if my being wed would be a satisfactory explanation.”

“Why do we not simply walk out of here?” William looked as if the easiest solution would suit him better.

“The two of you could do that easily.” Adrienna nodded toward Sarah. “But we are the queen’s charges. While I am wed, giving me leave to do my husband’s bidding, Sarah is not. She doesn’t have the option of simply walking out of here.”

“If they don’t realize she’s gone—” Heavy footsteps and the clanging of swords echoed in the corridor, cutting off whatever William was about to say.

William cursed, then started pulling off his clothing. He stopped in front of Sarah. “Get in bed with me.”

She tipped her head to look up at him. “What did you say?”

He tossed his tunic atop a chest along the wall and pulled his shirt over his head. That garment joined the first. “You heard me.”

Her eyes wide and unblinking, were glued to his naked chest.
